Description

20mm Mixed Ballast

The Standard Trade 20mm Ballast provides a heavy-duty solution for structural concrete applications across residential and commercial job sites. This coarse aggregate consists of a pre-mixed blend of sharp sand and crushed stone, typically screened to a 20mm maximum size. It serves as the primary bulk filler for foundations, footings, and heavy-duty floor screeds where structural integrity is the priority.

Built for the Job

This all-in aggregate mix simplifies site operations by combining the two essential dry components required for concrete production. Contractors use this material for setting fence posts, creating garden paths, and pouring sub-bases for outbuildings. The specific ratio of stone to sand ensures that the mixture provides high internal friction and density. This characteristic is vital for load-bearing structures that must resist shifting or settling over time. The inclusion of sharp sand helps fill the voids between the larger 20mm stones, creating a denser final product when hydrated with cement.

  • Creating structural footings for residential walling and extensions.

  • Pouring solid bases for sheds, greenhouses, and external machinery.

  • Backfilling trenches where a stable, non-shifting material is required.

Product Highlights

Grading Consistency

The stone component is screened to 20mm to ensure uniform distribution within the concrete matrix.

Material Composition
  • Sharp sand included for superior void filling and workability.
  • Crushed limestone or gravel provides high compressive strength.
Drainage Properties

The coarse nature of this material allows for controlled moisture migration when used as a sub-base.

On-Site & Workshop Notes

  • Store the material on a clean, hard surface to prevent soil contamination or organic matter ingress.

  • Segregation can occur if the pile is moved frequently; keep handling to a minimum before mixing.

  • For a standard C20 strength concrete, use a ratio of six parts of this mixed aggregate to one part cement.

  • Ensure the mix remains damp during the initial curing process to prevent surface cracking in direct sun.
